Why Travelers Keep Returning to Scrub Island
Travelers keep returning to Scrub Island because it delivers the feeling of a private island without the long journey that usually comes with one. This small island sits about 1.5 miles off Tortola's northeast coast in the British Virgin Islands, close to the main airport, with hillside homes that look out over the sea and the islands beyond.
It's that combination of ease and seclusion that brings people back. Once you've arrived at a house on Scrub Island and watched the boats cross the channel from your terrace, it's easy to see why so many guests book the same view again.
Where Is Scrub Island?
Scrub Island lies off the northeastern end of Tortola, the largest of the British Virgin Islands and home to the capital, Road Town. It's a privately owned island, hilly and green, with homes set on the slopes above the water and a marina on its shore.
The location is the first thing to understand. Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport sits on Beef Island, just off Tortola's eastern tip, and according to our listings it's only about 3 kilometers from our Scrub Island homes across the water. Virgin Gorda lies farther east, around 10 kilometers by sea to its airport, again according to our listings.
Why Do Travelers Keep Coming Back?
Most of the reasons come back to geography:
- An easy arrival. Our Scrub Island listings include roundtrip airport transfers from Beef Island and a daily ferry, so the last leg of the journey is a short crossing rather than a long transfer.
- Homes with the sea in every view. The houses sit on the hillside above the coast, with terraces, private plunge pools and outlooks across the water to neighboring islands.
- A central base for the BVI. Scrub Island is well placed for boat days to Tortola, Virgin Gorda and the cays in between, without the feeling of being far from everything.
- The quiet of a small island. There are no busy streets or crowds, just the rhythm of the water, the trade winds and the light across the channel.
What a Day on Scrub Island Feels Like
A day here tends to start on the terrace. Morning light comes off the water, the first boats leave the marina, and a swim in your own plunge pool is the closest thing to an alarm clock.
From there, the island gives you choices rather than a schedule. North Beach is a short walk from some of our homes, about 300 meters from Leeward House according to our listing, and the waters around the island lend themselves to snorkeling, diving and sailing. Hiking trails lead up through the island's greenery to wider views of the surrounding sea.
Longer days on the water are just as easy. According to our listings, The Baths on Virgin Gorda, with its famous granite boulders, sits about 9 kilometers away by boat, as do Spring Bay and Devil's Bay National Parks. A private charter turns that into a relaxed day out, with a swim stop or two on the way home.
When Is the Best Time to Visit Scrub Island?
The best time to visit Scrub Island is December through April, when the trade winds are steady, rain usually comes as a brief passing shower and conditions on the water are at their most reliable. These are the busiest months across the Virgin Islands, so the holidays and the weeks around Easter are worth planning well ahead.
May and the first half of December are quieter and often keep much of the winter sunshine. The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from June 1 to November 30, so summer and autumn trips call for flexible plans and travel insurance that clearly covers named storms.
Who Scrub Island Suits Best
Scrub Island suits travelers who want a private-island setting with very little effort spent getting there. Couples, families and small groups of friends all do well here, as long as they're happy to let the water set the pace.
Couples
For two, the appeal is simple: a home with a view, a pool to yourselves and days that move between the terrace and the sea.
Families and Groups
Families and groups appreciate homes with open-plan living, a gourmet kitchen and outdoor dining where everyone can gather. The island's small scale makes it feel manageable, and the on-island transfers included in our listings make getting around simple.
Travelers With Dogs
Our Scrub Island listings allow pets, up to a maximum of two dogs per reservation. For guests who'd rather not leave the family dog behind, that's a rare and welcome detail.
Our Luxury Villas on Scrub Island
Scrub Island is one of the small BVI islands where our homes are on the island itself. These luxury homes for rent each come with concierge and housekeeping, plus the transfers described above, and each has its own personality on the slope.
Sunrise watchers should look first at Leeward House, where an open-plan living room flows onto a main terrace with uninterrupted views of the Caribbean Sea, and a private plunge pool has an infinity edge. The master suite has a large standalone tub and an outdoor shower, and there's a dedicated workspace for anyone who needs to check in with the office.
For an oceanfront setting, Shoreline Villa is an oceanfront hillside home with a private infinity-edge plunge pool and endless views of the surrounding islands. Its gourmet kitchen has a raised quartz breakfast bar, and the master suites include standalone tubs and private outdoor showers.
For evenings, Villa Mila faces the sunset. Soaring vaulted ceilings open onto a terrace with panoramic sea views and an infinity-edge pool, and a barbecue, a separate dining area and a marble breakfast bar make it a natural home for long dinners. It's also the closest of the three to the island's marina, about 150 meters away according to our listing.
How We Plan a Return to Scrub Island
Renting a villa in the Caribbean is most rewarding when the house fits the way you like to spend your days, and on a return trip you may already know which view you want. Early risers tend to suit the sunrise outlook at Leeward House, while evening people lean toward the sunset views from Villa Mila.
Our concierge team can arrange boat charters to Virgin Gorda and the outer islands, provisioning before you arrive and a private chef for nights at home. Every home in our collection is personally inspected before it joins us, and each stay is checked before arrival. Among villa vacation rentals in the Virgin Islands, that consistency is part of what makes a return visit feel effortless.
Planning Your Visit
Why travelers keep returning to Scrub Island isn't a mystery: it's close enough to arrive easily, small enough to feel private and well placed for exploring the rest of the British Virgin Islands by boat. Add a hillside home with its own pool and the sea in every direction, and the decision to come back makes itself.
We've been placing guests in luxury holiday villas since 1979, and Scrub Island shows how much a well-placed small island can offer. Explore Scrub Island, discover nearby Tortola, browse our homes on Virgin Gorda, and when you're ready, we're here.
