What Most Travelers Don't Know About Fish Bay, St. John
Most travelers know St. John for the beaches of its north shore. Fewer know Fish Bay, St. John, a quiet bay on the island's south side, where the pace is residential and the views run out toward open water rather than toward a busy beach. It's a setting for people who want the island without the crowd.
We don't currently list villas in Fish Bay itself. What we can do is show you which of our homes look over it, or sit close by, according to their own listings. Here's what's worth knowing about Fish Bay.
Five Things Worth Knowing Before You Go
A few points tend to surprise first-time visitors:
- It's on the south side. Fish Bay lies on the south side of the island, away from the well-known national park beaches such as Trunk Bay and Cinnamon Bay on the north shore.
- Most of the island is protected. More than half of St. John lies within Virgin Islands National Park, which is why so much of it stays green and lightly built.
- There's no airport. You fly into St. Thomas and finish the journey by ferry or private boat, usually arriving at Cruz Bay.
- You'll want a vehicle. Roads are steep and winding, traffic keeps to the left, and most guests rent a four-wheel-drive vehicle.
- The calendar matters. December through April is the driest stretch, and Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30.
Why the South Side Feels Different
The south side of St. John is about quiet more than activity. Our listings in this part of the island describe hillside homes, sheltered bays and long views over the sea, rather than a town or a resort beach on the doorstep.
That suits a certain kind of stay. Days start with coffee on the terrace and a swim in the villa pool. Beach outings and dinners in Cruz Bay become planned trips rather than a walk, and the evenings belong to the house.
If you want to be on the north shore beaches every morning, a home on that side may serve you better. If you want space, privacy and a view, the south is worth a closer look.
Where to Stay: Our Villas Near Fish Bay
The home with the clearest connection to the bay is Eco Serendib. Our listing describes sea views that stretch from Fish Bay to Ram Head. It uses solar energy, and alongside the salt pool and hot tub there's an on-site spa with a sauna, a steam room and a treatment suite, plus a gym. The listing puts Cruz Bay about a 10-minute drive away.
Also on the south side, Driftwood Villa stands on a peninsula at Ditleff Point above Rendezvous Bay. It has 270-degree views over two bays, a heated infinity pool and a short walk to a sandy beach, and our listing puts the ferry terminal about 2.7 miles away.
For villas for groups and larger families, Villa Panache sits above Rendezvous Bay in the Estate Rendezvous neighborhood. A 30-foot heated pool, a shaded gazebo and a fully equipped outdoor kitchen keep life centered on the terraces, and the separate lower-level suite works well for families with young children.
Who Fish Bay Suits Best
A south-side stay works best for travelers who value the house as much as the beach. In our experience, that means:
- Couples and small groups who want privacy and a view more than a busy beach.
- Wellness-minded guests, who will make real use of a home like Eco Serendib with its spa and gym.
- Families looking for family-friendly villas with room to spread out, such as Villa Panache.
When to Visit the South Side
The best time to visit is December through April, when St. John is at its driest and the trade winds keep the terraces comfortable. Those months are also the busiest, so homes around Rendezvous Bay and the rest of the south side are best reserved well ahead.
May and early June are quieter, with warm water and easier booking. Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, with the highest risk usually from August through October, so later trips call for flexible dates and insurance that covers named storms.
