What Makes Rendezvous Bay on St. John So Timeless?
Rendezvous Bay, St. John endures because it gets the balance right: a quiet, residential bay on the island's south shore, open to the Caribbean, yet only a short drive from Cruz Bay. You get the hillside privacy of a villa neighborhood without the long drives of the island's more remote corners.
This Rendezvous Bay is in the US Virgin Islands, not the bay of the same name on Anguilla. Here's why guests keep choosing it, and how we'd plan a stay in Rendezvous Bay.
A South Shore Bay Close to Everything
Rendezvous Bay sits on the south shore of St. John, the smallest of the three main islands of the US Virgin Islands. Homes here are set on the hillsides above the water, so most of them look out across open Caribbean water.
The location is practical as well as scenic. Our listings put the Saint John Ferry Terminal in Cruz Bay about 2.4 to 2.7 miles away, which makes arrival day, provisioning and a dinner in town easy. The north shore's national park beaches are a longer drive: our listings place Honeymoon Beach about 4.2 miles off and Trunk Bay about 5.3 miles.
What Gives Rendezvous Bay Its Lasting Appeal
The bay doesn't depend on anything that goes out of fashion. Its appeal comes from a few constants:
- The view. Hillside homes look over open water, and the light changes all day.
- Residential calm. This is a neighborhood of private homes, not a busy beach scene.
- Easy access. Cruz Bay is close, so you never feel cut off.
- The water. Our listing for Driftwood Villa mentions sea turtles over calm reefs nearby, and snorkeling is part of most days.
That mix suits families and groups especially well. Children have room to swim and play at the villa, while adults can reach the town or a beach without a long drive.
What a Day in Rendezvous Bay Feels Like
A Rendezvous Bay day usually begins on the terrace, with coffee and the sea spread out below the house. Mornings are for the water, with a swim or a snorkel before the day warms up.
By midday, many guests drive across the island to one of the national park beaches on the north shore, then come back to the villa pool in the afternoon. Evenings tend to stay at home. The grill goes on, the light fades over the water and the hillside goes quiet, though Cruz Bay is close enough when you want a night out in town.
Our Villas in Rendezvous Bay
We currently have two homes in Rendezvous Bay, and they suit quite different trips. Both are personally inspected before joining our collection, and we check each one again before every stay.
On the Ditleff Point peninsula, Driftwood Villa takes in 270-degree views over two bays and is a short walk from a sandy beach. A heated infinity pool, a hammock area and an outdoor dining terrace make the most of the setting, and our listing notes sunsets over the bay and a short path to the crest of the hill. Inside, sliding glass walls, a media room and wet bars keep the focus on the water. It's well suited to couples and smaller families.
Above the bay in the Estate Rendezvous neighborhood, Villa Panache is built for larger gatherings. A 30-foot heated pool, a shaded gazebo and a fully equipped outdoor kitchen anchor the decks, and the great room opens through mahogany archways to the sea breeze. A lower-level suite gives families with young children their own space, making it a natural family-friendly villa and a strong choice among our villas for groups on St. John.
Planning a Stay in Rendezvous Bay
Timing comes first. December through April is the driest and busiest season on St. John, so St. John USVI vacation rentals in sought-after spots like Rendezvous Bay book early. Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, with the highest risk usually from August through October.
Here's how most stays come together:
- Fly into St. Thomas. St. John has no commercial airport. Our listings put Cyril E. King Airport about 16.4 to 16.8 miles away, with a boat transfer required.
- Cross to Cruz Bay. Ferries run to Cruz Bay, and our concierge can arrange a private boat instead.
- Pick up a vehicle. A four-wheel-drive is the practical choice on St. John's steep roads, and traffic keeps to the left.
St. John is part of the US Virgin Islands, a US territory, so the currency is the US dollar and American citizens don't need a passport. Both homes include a concierge service and midweek housekeeping, and we can arrange provisioning or a private chef before you arrive.
