The Hidden Side of Beef Island Luxury Travel
The hidden side of Beef Island luxury travel is that most people never stop to notice the island at all. They land at the airport, step into a car or onto a boat and move on. Yet this small, quiet island off Tortola's east end shapes almost every journey through the British Virgin Islands, and it rewards a closer look.
Here's what we tell guests about Beef Island before they arrive.
What Is Beef Island, and Where Is It?
Beef Island is a small island at the eastern tip of Tortola, the largest island in the British Virgin Islands. A short bridge joins the two, so most visitors cross onto Tortola without realizing they've changed islands.
The island is low-key and lightly built. It's best known as the home of Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport, the main airport for the territory. Beyond the runway, the landscape is quiet, with open shoreline, small bays and views east toward the smaller islands that lie just offshore.
What Most Visitors Miss About Beef Island
The surprises here are mostly about position and pace. These are the points we share with guests who will pass through:
- It's the front door to the islands. For most travelers flying in, the British Virgin Islands begin here.
- It faces east. Sitting at Tortola's eastern edge, it looks toward the smaller islands nearby and the sailing waters beyond.
- It's quieter than Tortola. Road Town's traffic and harbor bustle feel a long way off.
- It shortens the trip onward. Being at the east end of Tortola puts the islands further east, including Virgin Gorda, closer than they are from Road Town.
That last point matters more than it sounds. In the virgin islands caribbean way of travel, the boat ride is part of the holiday, and a shorter one leaves more of the first afternoon for the pool.
How Beef Island Shapes a Luxury Stay
Beef Island's role in a luxury stay is about timing and ease. A smooth arrival here sets the tone for the whole week, and that's where planning makes the biggest difference.
We like to have each step settled before you land, and our concierge team can arrange the transfer onward to your home. According to our listings, Terrance B. Lettsome Airport is around 21 to 22 kilometers from Oil Nut Bay on Virgin Gorda, a journey that includes a boat transfer. For guests staying elsewhere on Virgin Gorda, the island also has its own smaller airport.
The weather follows the rest of the BVI. December through April is the driest, breeziest stretch, and Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from June 1 to November 30, so flexible plans are wise for summer and autumn travel.
Where to Stay: Our Villas Near Beef Island
We don't currently list villas on Beef Island itself, so we place guests in our homes on Virgin Gorda, a boat ride to the east. For anyone renting a villa in the Caribbean through this gateway, these are the homes we suggest first.
Perched on Oil Nut Bay's Atlantic Ridge, on Virgin Gorda's south shore, Oil Nut Bay - Whale Point Villa is an intimate retreat built around an expansive deck and a plunge pool suspended above the ocean. Whales can sometimes be seen passing by, and the Beach Club is a short stroll away.
Families often prefer Oil Nut Bay - Sea Sabella Villa, which looks out over Deep Bay and the surrounding islands. Its dual-level layout includes two covered terraces, a plunge pool, and a lower level with a kitchenette and second sitting area, and the Marina and Marina Village are a short walk away. Both Oil Nut Bay homes include resort privileges, concierge service, daily housekeeping and daily breakfast at the Beach Club restaurant.
For villas for groups, Aquamare sits on a half-mile stretch of white sand at Mahoe Bay. It's made up of three separate villas that can be rented alone or together, each with its own infinity-edge pool and sundeck, plus a thatched palapa by the sea for massages. Daily housekeeping and concierge service are included, and a private chef can be arranged in advance.
Planning Luxury Villa Holidays Through Beef Island
Luxury villa holidays in the BVI work best when the arrival is planned as carefully as the stay. A family heading to Oil Nut Bay - Sea Sabella Villa or a group bound for Aquamare shouldn't have to think about anything once the plane door opens.
Every home in our collection is personally inspected before it joins us, and each stay is checked before arrival. We've been arranging vacation rentals with pools and private villa stays since 1979, and that experience shows most in moments like a well-timed transfer.
