Everything You Need to Know Before Visiting Bethany, St. John
The first thing to know before visiting Bethany, St. John is that it's a small place on a small island. We don't currently list villas in Bethany itself, so your stay will be shaped by St. John as a whole: how you arrive, when you come and which of our homes elsewhere on the island you choose.
We'd rather tell you that plainly than dress it up. Here's what matters when you're planning a trip that includes Bethany.
Bethany Belongs to an Island Shaped by Its National Park
The setting around Bethany is defined by St. John, the smallest of the three main islands of the US Virgin Islands. More than half of St. John's land lies within Virgin Islands National Park, which is why so much of the island stays green, steep and lightly built.
That has real consequences for a visit. Beaches such as Trunk Bay and Cinnamon Bay sit inside the park, hiking trails cross its forested ridges, and the old sugar estate ruins at Annaberg recall the island's Danish colonial past. Wherever you stay, those places are part of your days.
How to Get to Bethany
Reaching Bethany takes a flight and a boat, because St. John has no commercial airport. The journey usually runs like this:
- Fly into St. Thomas. Cyril E. King Airport on St. Thomas is the usual gateway.
- Cross to St. John by boat. Public ferries arrive at Cruz Bay, the island's main town, and we can arrange a private boat transfer instead.
- Drive the rest of the way. St. John's roads are steep and winding, and traffic keeps to the left, so most guests rent a four-wheel-drive vehicle.
The island is a US territory, so the currency is the US dollar and American citizens don't need a passport to visit. Carrying one is still the easiest proof of citizenship.
When Is the Best Time to Visit?
The best time to visit is December through April, when the weather is at its driest and the trade winds keep days comfortable. These are also the busiest months, so homes are best reserved well ahead.
May and early June are quieter, with warm water and fewer visitors. Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, with the highest risk usually from August through October, so summer and autumn trips call for flexible plans and insurance that covers named storms.
Where to Stay: Our Villas Elsewhere on St. John
Because we don't list homes in Bethany, we place guests in our private villas elsewhere on St. John. The island is small, but its roads are slow, so it's worth choosing the house for the coast you want to see each morning.
For a stay on the water, Ocean Whisper sits on more than an acre of gated waterfront land on Great Cruz Bay. Its very large pool has a shallow sun shelf, a waterfall and a swim-up bar at the cabana, and the coral-and-sand waterfront gives direct access to the bay for snorkeling. Our listing puts Cruz Bay about 2.7 kilometers away, and a crib, highchair and baby monitor make it a family-friendly villa for younger children.
Above Hart Bay, Villa Mistral has an infinity-edged saline pool, a grotto pool with a waterfall and direct access to the rocky shore below. Fruit trees surround the grounds, and our listing places Cruz Bay about 2.6 kilometers away.
For larger families, Villa Panache sits above Rendezvous Bay in the Estate Rendezvous neighborhood. A heated pool, a shaded gazebo and an outdoor kitchen make the terraces the center of the stay.
How We Help You Plan
Vacation rentals on St. John work best when the house and the logistics are planned together. Our concierge team can arrange boat transfers, a rental vehicle and provisioning before you arrive, so the first evening is spent on the terrace rather than in a queue.
Every home in our collection is personally inspected before it joins, and each stay gets a pre-arrival check. That matters on an island where the journey in has a few moving parts.
