Why Travelers Keep Returning to Privateer Bay, St. John
Travelers keep returning to Privateer Bay, St. John for the same reason they return to the island at all: on the East End, St. John is at its quietest, with steep green hills, open water and very little built between them. It's the far side of an island that already feels unhurried.
We'll be straightforward about one thing. We don't currently list villas in Privateer Bay itself, so most guests stay elsewhere on St. John and come out to the East End for the day. Here's what draws people back to Privateer Bay and how to plan around it.
Privateer Bay Sits on St. John's Quiet East End
Privateer Bay lies on the East End of St. John, the narrow eastern arm of the smallest of the three main US Virgin Islands. It's about as far as you can travel from Cruz Bay, the island's main town on the west coast, without getting back on a boat.
That distance is the point. The western half of the island holds the ferry dock, the busiest roads and most of the restaurants. The East End is sparsely developed by comparison, and the drive out passes the quieter settlement of Coral Bay before the road thins toward the island's tip. The views here look east toward the British Virgin Islands.
What Brings Guests Back to the East End
Most repeat visitors come back for a feeling rather than a single sight. In our experience, these are the things they mention:
- Silence. With few homes and little traffic, the East End is where St. John feels most remote.
- Water views in every direction. The narrow shape of the land puts the sea on more than one side.
- A slower day. A drive out to the East End naturally becomes the whole afternoon, with a swim and a long lunch packed in a cooler.
- The contrast with the rest of the island. Many guests split their time between a home near Cruz Bay and days exploring the island's emptier corners.
It's also worth knowing what the East End isn't. It's not a place for nightlife or for walking to dinner, and services are limited. That's exactly why the guests who love it keep returning.
Where to Stay: Our Villas Elsewhere on St. John
Because we don't list homes in Privateer Bay, we place guests in our private villas elsewhere on St. John. All of them sit well west of the East End and closer to Cruz Bay, which makes the ferry, provisioning and dinners in town much easier.
For wellness-focused stays, Eco Serendib has sea views that, by our listing, stretch from Fish Bay to Ram Head. It has an on-site spa with a sauna, steam room and treatment suite, a pool and hot tub, a gym and solar energy, and our listing puts it about a 10-minute drive from Cruz Bay.
Villa Mistral, which our listing describes as perched above Hart Bay, has an infinity-edged saline pool and a grotto pool with a waterfall. Fruit trees surround the grounds, and our listing places Cruz Bay about 2.6 kilometers away.
On the north shore, Coastal Charm sits in the gated enclave of Peter Bay, looking toward Cinnamon Bay Beach. Its heated pool, tropical gardens and coral stone interiors give it real character among the luxury homes for rent we offer on the island.
How to Plan a Trip That Includes Privateer Bay
The best time to visit is December through April, when St. John is driest and the trade winds keep days comfortable. These months are also the busiest, so vacation rentals on St. John are best reserved well ahead. Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30.
Getting here takes a flight and a boat. Most guests fly into Cyril E. King Airport on St. Thomas and cross to Cruz Bay by ferry or private boat, since St. John has no commercial airport. From there, a four-wheel-drive vehicle is the practical choice for the long, steep drive east. Traffic keeps to the left.
Our concierge team can arrange the boat transfer, the rental vehicle and a provisioned kitchen before you land. Every home in our collection is personally inspected before it joins, and each stay gets a pre-arrival check.
