Why Travelers Keep Returning to Chocolate Hole, St. John
Travelers keep returning to Chocolate Hole, St. John because it solves the island's oldest dilemma. It's a quiet residential bay on the south shore, yet town, the ferry dock and the national park are all a short drive away. You get water at the foot of the garden and dinner in Cruz Bay without a long evening drive.
We don't currently list villas in Chocolate Hole itself, but our nearby waterfront home, Ocean Whisper, explains a lot about why guests keep coming back to this stretch of the south shore.
Where Is Chocolate Hole on St. John?
Chocolate Hole sits on the south side of St. John, the smallest of the three main islands of the US Virgin Islands. It lies just southeast of Cruz Bay, the island's main town and ferry landing, beside the larger inlet of Great Cruz Bay.
The area is residential rather than commercial. Private homes sit on the green slopes around the water. According to our listing for Ocean Whisper, Cruz Bay is about 2.7 kilometers from the house, and the boundary of Virgin Islands National Park about 3 kilometers.
That geography is the whole appeal. You're close enough to town to treat it as a neighbor, but far enough out that evenings are quiet and the loudest sound after dark is usually the water.
Why Chocolate Hole, St. John Keeps Drawing Guests Back
The guests who return here tend to give the same handful of reasons. In our experience, these are the ones that matter most:
- Town without the bustle. Cruz Bay's dining and small shops are minutes away, but you don't hear them from the terrace.
- Water at your door. A waterfront home such as Ocean Whisper opens straight onto the bay, so a morning swim or snorkel doesn't require packing a bag.
- An easy arrival. The ferry from St. Thomas lands in Cruz Bay, which keeps the last leg of the journey short.
- The park within reach. Our Ocean Whisper listing puts Honeymoon Beach about 3.9 kilometers away and Trunk Bay about 8.2 kilometers, so the north shore makes a simple day out.
- A settled, lived-in feel. It reads as a neighborhood rather than a resort strip, which suits guests who want to feel at home on the island.
None of these is dramatic on its own. Together they make for a stay that runs smoothly from the first evening, and smooth is what brings people back.
Our Waterfront Home Nearby
Ocean Whisper is the house that anchors our recommendation here. Our listing files it under Great Cruz Bay and describes it as a waterfront property with views over that bay, set on more than an acre of gated land.
The pool is the center of the house. It's very large, with a waterfall, a shallow sun shelf suited to small children and a swim-up bar at the cabana, which also holds a media area and an outdoor shower. A fire pit and a pergola for outdoor dining carry the evening on after the swim.
Inside, hand-carved mahogany and cypress ceilings give the rooms a West Indian character, and the kitchen is equipped with Viking appliances for anyone who likes to cook. From the coral-and-sand waterfront, you can step into Great Cruz Bay for snorkeling. A crib, a highchair and a baby monitor make it a practical choice for families with very young children, and house cleaning is included four times a week.
If You'd Prefer a Different Corner of the South Shore
Some guests love the idea of the south shore but want more distance from town. For them, we often suggest Driftwood Villa, which sits on a peninsula at Ditleff Point above Rendezvous Bay, farther along the south coast. It isn't in Chocolate Hole, and our listing puts the Cruz Bay ferry terminal about 2.7 miles away.
What you trade in convenience, you gain in outlook. Driftwood Villa looks over two bays with 270-degree views, has a heated infinity pool and a hammock area, and is a short walk from a sandy beach. A short path climbs to the crest of the hill for the view at dusk.
What a Stay in Chocolate Hole Feels Like
Days here tend to settle into an easy rhythm. Mornings start on the water, when the bay is at its calmest. Late morning might be a drive to the north shore beaches inside the park, timed to beat the day boats from St. Thomas.
Afternoons drift back to the villa and the pool. Then, as the light softens, a short drive into Cruz Bay for dinner, or a private chef if nobody wants to move. It's a stay with very little friction, and that's exactly the point.
Planning Your Stay
A little planning makes a south shore stay effortless. A few things we share with every guest:
- Choose your season. December through April is the driest and busiest period, and the best homes book well ahead. Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, with the highest risk usually from August through October.
- Arrange a vehicle. St. John's roads are steep and winding and traffic keeps to the left, so most guests rent a four-wheel-drive vehicle. We can have it ready when you land.
- Decide how much help you want. Our concierge can arrange provisioning, a private chef, boat days and transfers from St. Thomas.
Every home in our collection is personally inspected before it joins, and each stay gets a pre-arrival check. Among St. John luxury rentals, that's what lets a house like Ocean Whisper feel ready the moment you walk in.
A Neighborhood Worth Coming Back To
Chocolate Hole, St. John rewards travelers who want the island's water and quiet without giving up the convenience of town. It's not the most dramatic address on the island, but it may be the easiest one to live in, and that's why so many guests make it a habit.
