When Is the Best Time to Visit Dever's Bay, St. John?
The best time to visit Dever's Bay is December through April, when St. John is at its driest and the trade winds keep the days comfortable. Those are also the island's busiest months, so if you want the quietest version of the place, late April through early June is the window we'd look at next.
Dever's Bay is a small bay on St. John, and its seasons are the island's seasons. Here's how the year plays out, and where we'd place you for a stay that includes Dever's Bay.
How the Seasons Work on St. John
St. John has two broad seasons rather than four. The dry season runs roughly from December through April, and the wetter, hotter months follow from summer into autumn, overlapping with Atlantic hurricane season.
It's warm all year. What changes from month to month is rain, humidity, the strength of the breeze and how many people share the island with you. Here's how we'd sum up the calendar:
- December to April: the driest, most settled weather and the highest demand. The holidays book earliest.
- May to early June: still mostly dry, with warm water and noticeably fewer visitors.
- June to November: Atlantic hurricane season, which officially runs from June 1 to November 30.
- August to October: the period of highest storm risk, and the quietest months on the island.
December to April: The Classic Window
Winter and spring are when St. John feels most like the island people picture. Rain tends to come in short showers, the sea is often at its calmest and the evenings suit a long dinner on the terrace.
This is also when vacation rentals on St. John are in shortest supply. For Christmas, New Year and the school spring breaks, we'd start the conversation many months ahead, especially for the larger homes.
May and Early June: The Quiet Shoulder
Late spring is our favorite answer for guests who have flexible dates. The weather is generally still settled, the water is warm for snorkeling and the national park beaches, such as Trunk Bay and Cinnamon Bay, are calmer than they are in high season.
Booking is easier too. That makes this a sensible window for a first visit, or for a family that wants space without the holiday crowds.
Summer and Autumn: Hurricane Season
Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, and the highest risk usually falls from August through October. Many trips in these months pass without trouble, but we'd only plan one with flexible dates and travel insurance that covers named storms.
If you do travel then, the island is at its most peaceful. It's simply a trade-off worth making with your eyes open.
Getting to Dever's Bay in Any Season
The journey is the same all year. St. John has no commercial airport, so most guests:
- Fly into Cyril E. King Airport on St. Thomas.
- Cross to St. John by public ferry or a private boat transfer, usually arriving at Cruz Bay, the island's main town.
- Drive on from there. Roads are steep and winding, traffic keeps to the left, and most guests rent a four-wheel-drive vehicle.
The island is part of the US Virgin Islands, so the currency is the US dollar and American citizens don't need a passport to visit.
Where to Stay: Our Villas Elsewhere on St. John
We don't currently list villas in Dever's Bay itself, so we place guests in our private homes elsewhere on the island. Our listings measure their distances from Cruz Bay and the ferry terminal, which is the clearest way we have to show where each one sits.
Villa Mistral, which our listing describes as perched above Hart Bay, has an infinity-edged saline pool and a grotto pool with a waterfall. Fruit trees surround the grounds, and our listing puts Cruz Bay about 2.6 kilometers away.
Families tend to look at Ocean Whisper, set on more than an acre of gated waterfront land on Great Cruz Bay. Its very large pool has a shallow sun shelf, a waterfall and a swim-up bar at the cabana, and the coral-and-sand waterfront leads straight into the bay. Our listing places Cruz Bay about 2.7 kilometers away.
For a quieter peninsula setting, Driftwood Villa stands on a peninsula at Ditleff Point above Rendezvous Bay, with views over two bays, a heated infinity pool and a short walk to a sandy beach. Our listing puts the ferry terminal about 2.7 miles away.
How We Help You Time the Trip
St. John USVI vacation rentals work best when the dates, the house and the logistics are planned together. Our concierge team can arrange boat transfers, a rental vehicle and provisioning before you arrive.
Every home in our collection is personally inspected before it joins, and each stay gets a pre-arrival check. In high season, that early planning is what secures homes like Villa Mistral for the week you actually want.
