Great Cruz Bay, St. John: Where to Stay and Why It's Worth It
Great Cruz Bay, St. John is worth it if you want calm water at the foot of the house and the island's main town a short drive away. The place to stay is a waterfront villa, and the one home on our Great Cruz Bay page, Ocean Whisper, puts the bay itself at the edge of the property.
That's the short version. Below is what the bay is like, who it suits and how we'd plan a stay in Great Cruz Bay.
Where Is Great Cruz Bay?
Great Cruz Bay is a sheltered bay on the southwest coast of St. John, just around the shoreline from Cruz Bay, the island's main town and ferry landing. St. John is the smallest of the three main islands of the US Virgin Islands, and more than half of its land lies within Virgin Islands National Park.
The bay's shape is its advantage. It cuts well into the land, so the water inside tends to stay quieter than on more open stretches of coast, and boats often ride at anchor in it.
Why It's Worth It
Great Cruz Bay earns its place for practical reasons as much as scenic ones. These are the points we make to guests weighing it:
- The water is close and calm. A sheltered bay suits morning swims, paddling and easy snorkeling from the shore.
- Town is near. Our listing for Ocean Whisper puts Cruz Bay about 2.7 kilometers away, so dinner in town or an early ferry is a short trip.
- The park is within reach. The same listing places Virgin Islands National Park about 3 kilometers away and Trunk Bay about 8.2 kilometers, so the north shore beaches make an easy day out.
- The house is the center of the stay. On a waterfront villa, days revolve around the pool, the terrace and the bay below.
What you give up is the open-ocean drama of the north shore. If your picture of St. John is a long sweep of park beach outside the door, the north side will suit you better.
Where to Stay in Great Cruz Bay
The one home on our Great Cruz Bay page is Ocean Whisper. Its listing places it on more than an acre of gated waterfront land looking over Great Cruz Bay, and its coral-and-sand waterfront gives direct access into the bay for snorkeling.
The house is built for long days outside. A very large pool has a waterfall, a shallow sun shelf for small children and a swim-up bar at the cabana, and there's a fire pit and a pergola for dinners outdoors. Inside, the Great Room has soaring arched windows and stonework, with hand-carved mahogany and cypress ceilings throughout. A crib, highchair and baby monitor make it an easy choice for families, and its scale makes it one of our villas for groups on this side of the island.
If Ocean Whisper isn't available, we look nearby on St. John's south side:
- Toward Hart Bay, Villa Mistral, which our listing describes as perched above that bay, has an infinity-edged saline pool, a grotto pool with a waterfall and grounds planted with mango, papaya and citrus. Our listing puts Cruz Bay about 2.6 kilometers away.
- At Ditleff Point, Driftwood Villa stands on a peninsula above Rendezvous Bay, with 270-degree views over two bays, a heated infinity pool and a short walk to a sandy beach.
Neither sits on Great Cruz Bay itself, but both keep you on the same quieter southern side, a short drive from town.
Planning a Stay: Getting There and When to Go
Reaching Great Cruz Bay takes a flight and a boat, because St. John has no commercial airport. Most guests fly into Cyril E. King Airport on St. Thomas, cross by ferry or private boat to Cruz Bay, then drive the last stretch.
A few points we share with everyone:
- Rent a vehicle. Roads on St. John are steep and winding, traffic keeps to the left, and most guests choose four-wheel drive.
- Book the dry season early. December through April is the driest, busiest stretch, and the best St. John luxury rentals are reserved well ahead.
- Plan around hurricane season. Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, with the highest risk usually from August through October, so later trips call for flexible plans and good insurance.
The island is a US territory, so the currency is the US dollar and American citizens don't need a passport to visit.
How We Help
Vacation rentals on St. John work best when the house and the logistics are planned together. Our concierge can arrange the boat transfer, a rental vehicle and provisioning before you land, so your first evening is spent by the water rather than at the shops.
Every home in our collection is personally inspected before it joins, and each stay gets a pre-arrival check. We've been placing guests in private homes since 1979, and a luxury holiday villa on an island with this many moving parts is where that experience shows.
Is Great Cruz Bay Right for You?
Great Cruz Bay, St. John suits travelers who want a calm, sheltered bay, a short drive to town and a house that does most of the entertaining. It's less suited to anyone who wants to step straight onto a long national park beach.
If that balance sounds right, Great Cruz Bay is worth a closer look, starting with Ocean Whisper on the water. When you're ready, we're here.
