Everything You Need to Know Before Visiting Hawksnest Bay, St. John
The first thing to know before visiting Hawksnest Bay, St. John is that it's known for its national park beach rather than for places to stay. The beach sits on the north shore inside Virgin Islands National Park, so you'll come here for the swim and the snorkeling and stay in a private home elsewhere on the island.
We don't list villas in Hawksnest Bay itself, and we'd rather say that plainly. Here's what matters when planning a trip around Hawksnest Bay.
Where Is Hawksnest Bay?
Hawksnest Bay lies on the north shore of St. John, the smallest of the three main islands of the US Virgin Islands. It's one of the first park beaches you reach driving east along the north shore from Cruz Bay, the island's main town.
More than half of St. John lies within Virgin Islands National Park, established in 1956. The forested hills above Hawksnest run straight down to the water, and the park's protection is the reason the bay looks the way it does.
What to Expect at the Beach
Hawksnest Beach is a park beach, so expect a natural shoreline rather than a resort setting. A few things worth knowing before you go:
- It's about the water. Coral reef lies close to shore, so bring snorkel gear and swim out gently.
- It's close to town. Because it's so near Cruz Bay, Hawksnest is an easy morning or late-afternoon swim rather than a full-day outing.
- Respect the reef. Park rules protect the coral and sea life, so don't stand on or touch the reef.
- Arrive early. Mornings are the quietest time on any north shore beach, before day visitors arrive.
How to Get to Hawksnest Bay
Reaching Hawksnest takes a flight, a boat and a short drive. St. John has no commercial airport, so the journey usually runs like this:
- Fly into St. Thomas. Cyril E. King Airport is the usual gateway.
- Cross to St. John by boat. Public ferries land at Cruz Bay, and we can arrange a private boat transfer instead.
- Drive the north shore. Roads are steep and winding, traffic keeps to the left, and most guests rent a four-wheel-drive vehicle.
The island is a US territory, so the currency is the US dollar and American citizens don't need a passport to visit.
When Is the Best Time to Visit?
The best time to visit is December through April, the driest and busiest stretch of the year. Villas for rent on the north shore are reserved early for those months, so plan well ahead.
May and early June are quieter, with warm water and fewer people on the beaches. Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, with the highest risk usually from August through October, so later trips call for flexible dates and good travel insurance.
Where to Stay: Our Villas Elsewhere on St. John
Because we don't list homes in Hawksnest Bay, we place guests in our homes elsewhere on St. John. For north shore days, a natural fit is Peter Bay, a gated neighborhood further east along the same coast.
Coastal Charm looks over Cinnamon Bay Beach from Peter Bay. Our listing puts Trunk Beach about 1.4 kilometers away and Cinnamon Bay Beach about 1.9 kilometers. Coral stone floors, carved coral pillars and stone walls inlaid with seashells set the tone, and a heated pool sits on the lower terrace, with beach chairs and coolers ready for the park beaches.
Higher up in Upper Peter Bay, Villa Carlota sits about 500 feet up the hillside behind an electronic gate. Its infinity-edge pool looks over Peter Bay and the sea beyond, and its listing places Trunk and Cinnamon Bays less than a ten-minute drive away. There's a roofed hot tub pavilion, an exercise room and snorkel gear on hand.
If you'd rather stay on the calmer south side and drive over, Ocean Whisper sits on gated waterfront land on Great Cruz Bay. Our listing puts Hawksnest Beach about 6.2 kilometers away.
