Guana Bay, Sint Maarten: Where to Stay and Why It's Worth It
Guana Bay, Sint Maarten is worth it for travelers who want open ocean, height and quiet more than a lively strip of sand. The bay sits on the island's eastern side, facing the Atlantic and backed by steep green hills, and the homes here are built on those slopes for the view. If privacy and a sense of space come first, it's one of the most compelling addresses on the Dutch side.
Here's what makes Guana Bay different from the rest of the island, and where we suggest staying.
Where Is Guana Bay?
Guana Bay lies on the east coast of Sint Maarten, the Dutch southern half of St. Martin. The island sits in the northeastern Caribbean and is shared by two nations, with French Saint Martin in the north. There's no formal border control between the two sides, so crossing is simply a drive.
The bay faces the open Atlantic rather than the calmer Caribbean. Ridges rise sharply behind a fairly narrow shoreline, and from higher ground the sightlines run out across the sea toward St. Barths. Philipsburg, the Dutch-side capital, is close by: our listing for Villa Amalia puts it about 3.9 kilometers away. Princess Juliana International Airport, on the island's western side, is about 12.7 kilometers from the same villa.
Why Guana Bay Is Worth It
The case for Guana Bay comes down to setting. On a small, busy Caribbean island, St. Maarten included, true elevation and open water are rare, and this cove has both.
What guests tend to value most:
- The view. Homes on the slopes look straight out over the Atlantic, with no neighboring bay in the way.
- The light. An east-facing coast means sunrise over the water rather than sunset, a quieter kind of drama that suits early risers.
- The privacy. Steep plots and winding approaches create natural distance between houses and the shoreline below.
- The breeze. The Atlantic side catches the trade winds, which keeps terraces comfortable through the day.
- The access. Philipsburg and the south coast are a short drive away, so you're secluded without being remote.
One honest caveat: Atlantic-facing water is usually livelier than the sheltered bays on the island's western side. Guana Bay is for looking at and walking beside as much as for gentle swimming, and calmer beaches are a drive away.
Who Guana Bay Suits Best
Guana Bay suits travelers who want the house itself to be the destination. Couples looking for a retreat, families who'd rather spread out around a pool than share a beach, and groups celebrating something together are the guests we most often place here.
It suits people less well if the plan is to walk to dinner every night or to spend whole days on calm, shallow water. For that, the west of the island, around Simpson Bay or the beaches of the French side, is a better fit.
Where to Stay in Guana Bay
Our home in the bay is Villa Amalia, a modern villa set on a cliff with open views over the sea. It's the kind of luxury holiday villa that works as a full base for the week. Outside, a heated saltwater lap pool is surrounded by lounging and dining space. There's a gym, a spa treatment area, a pickleball court, a pool table and a ping pong table, so a mixed group rarely runs out of things to do without leaving the property.
Service is where Villa Amalia stands out. The listing includes a private chef, a butler, daily housekeeping, a property manager, concierge and arrival and departure transfers. For villas for groups or a family-friendly villa with room for different generations, that combination means meals, logistics and quiet time are all taken care of.
Nearby Alternatives on the Dutch Side
Villa Amalia is the only home we list in Guana Bay itself, so for other styles of stay we look elsewhere in Sint Maarten.
On the south coast, Villa Aqua Vista sits in a quiet gated community in Indigo Bay, overlooking the Caribbean Sea. It's a contemporary home with a sea-facing terrace, a heated infinity pool and a private fitness room. Indigo Beach is about 1.1 kilometers away, according to our listing.
Further west, La Villa Salee on Pelican Key is set within a walled property overlooking the ocean, with an expansive terrace and pool facing the water, a private gym and a media room. Our listing puts the international airport about 5.4 kilometers away, which makes it a practical choice for shorter stays.
When Is the Best Time to Visit Guana Bay?
The best time to visit is December through April, the island's dry season, when the trade winds are steady and rain usually comes as a passing shower. Late April, May and early December are quieter and still largely dry.
Hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, with the greatest risk from August through October. Trips in those months call for flexible plans and travel insurance that clearly covers named storms.
How We Plan a Stay in Guana Bay
A villa in St. Maarten on this side of the island works best with a little planning around the drive. We usually suggest a few things:
- Plan beach days in advance. Calmer swimming beaches are a short drive away, and our concierge can arrange transport.
- Let the house carry the evenings. With a private chef on hand at Villa Amalia, dinner on the terrace is often the most relaxed evening of the trip.
- Book holiday weeks early. Homes with this level of service are reserved well ahead for December and the New Year.
Every home in our collection is personally inspected before it joins, and each stay is checked before arrival. We've been arranging villa stays across the Caribbean since 1979, and our concierge can handle transfers, provisioning and boat days around St. Maarten.
