Everything You Need to Know Before Visiting Pelican Key, Sint Maarten
Pelican Key, Sint Maarten is a hillside residential district on the southwest of the Dutch side, known for wide views over Simpson Bay and the Caribbean. It's not a beach resort or a village center. It's an established neighborhood of homes on the slope, and its value lies in the view and in how close it sits to the rest of the island.
Before you choose Pelican Key as your base, here's what's worth knowing.
Where Is Pelican Key?
Pelican Key sits on a peninsula in southwestern Sint Maarten, the Dutch southern half of St. Martin, above Simpson Bay and close to Cole Bay. For anyone still asking where St. Martin is, the island lies in the northeastern Caribbean and is shared by two nations: French Saint Martin in the north and Dutch Sint Maarten in the south. There's no formal border control between them.
From Pelican Key, the island's main points are close. Our listing for La Villa Salee puts Princess Juliana International Airport about 5.4 kilometers away, Maho Beach about 6.5 kilometers, Marigot on the French side about 7.2 kilometers and Philipsburg about 9.2 kilometers.
What to Know Before You Go
These are the points we share with guests considering Pelican Key for the first time:
It's a hillside, not a beach. Streets are tiered up the slope, so homes look out over the water rather than opening straight onto sand.
The views face west. From the higher streets, the outlook takes in Simpson Bay, the open sea and neighboring headlands, and evening light is part of the appeal.
It's on the Dutch side. English is the everyday language and the US dollar is widely accepted, while the French side uses the euro.
It's well placed. The airport, the Simpson Bay Lagoon and the road to the French side are all a short drive away.
A car or driver helps. Beaches, dining and errands mean driving, so we usually arrange transport before you arrive.
Who Pelican Key Suits Best
Pelican Key suits travelers who want a private home with a view and an efficient base for exploring. It works well for couples and families on shorter stays, since the airport is close, and for guests who plan to spend time on the water around Simpson Bay.
It's less suited to guests who want a beach on the doorstep. For that, the Beacon Hill and Maho side of Simpson Bay, a little further west, is the better choice.
Where to Stay on Pelican Key
Our home on Pelican Key is La Villa Salee, set within a walled property overlooking the ocean. Its name is a nod to the island's salt industry. The villa is built around an expansive terrace and a pool that look out over the water, with space for lounging and outdoor dining.
Inside, the kitchen, dining and living areas run together in an open-plan layout that flows onto the terrace. There's a private gym, a media room and a laptop-friendly workspace. Concierge is included, along with daily housekeeping except on Sundays and holidays.
Nearby Alternatives in Simpson Bay
Because La Villa Salee is our only listing on Pelican Key itself, we also suggest homes a short drive away in Simpson Bay, elsewhere in Sint Maarten.
For guests who love boats, Villa Abracadabra sits in the Aquamarina area of Simpson Bay with lagoon views, a pool, a covered terrace and its own boat dock. A communal gym is available, and our listing puts the airport about 2.7 kilometers away.
For beach access, Villa Beach Secrets is a contemporary home in the Beacon Hill area, with a private pool, sea views toward Saba and sunset views. Maho Beach is about 700 meters away, according to our listing. Both are luxury villas for rent that pair well with time on Pelican Key's side of the bay.
When Is the Best Time to Visit Pelican Key?
The best time to visit is December through April, the island's dry season, when trade winds keep days comfortable and rain is usually brief. Late April, May and early December are quieter and still largely dry.
Hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, with the greatest risk from August through October. Trips in those months call for flexible plans and travel insurance that clearly covers named storms.
How We Plan a Stay on Pelican Key
A villa in St. Maarten on this hillside works best with transport and a few outings planned ahead. From Pelican Key, we often arrange boat days out of the lagoon, beach afternoons on the west of the island and an evening or two on the French side.
Our concierge can handle airport transfers, provisioning before arrival, private chefs and charters. Every home in our collection is personally inspected before it joins, and each stay is checked before arrival. We've been arranging villa stays across the Caribbean since 1979, and we plan around both sides of this island every season.
